Spotify in patent row

Music streaming service Spotify is being sued for alledgedly violating patents that cover streaming music over data networks.  The patents in question were filed in 1995 and details of which can be found here.

Court papers were filed yesterday by patent owners PacketVideo.  Spotify has stated that it intends to contest the claims.  This claim is one in a long line of claims recently brought against big companies.  A lot of the companies making the claims haven’t successfully brought the idea to market.

BBC launches iPlayer app in Europe

The BBC has launched a new app for the iPad that allows users of 11 European countries to watch selected UK content in exchange for a subscription fee.  It costs 6.99 Euros a month and allows users to watch, and unlike the native UK app, allows them to download media to watch later.  This is particularly useful for people who like to watch shows on the go, but are hampered by bad 3g signal or usage caps from their mobile network as it allows them to utilise WiFi.

Luke Bradley-Jones, managing director of BBC.com told The Guardian: “This is not a catch-up service: this is a video-on-demand service,”; and continued: “We will have content from the last month, but also the best from the catalogue stretching back 50 to 60 years.”

Although the app is currently only available on the iPad, support for the iPhone and AppleTV is said to be coming soon.

Download the app from the iTunes store here.
